About Sari Organik
‘Sari Organik’ is Indonesian and means ‘Essence of Natural’.
We at Sari Organik started to grow organic produce 12 years ago. We started experimenting with vegetables, fruit, rice and animals, trying to find a balanced system that will sustain it self and the environment with minimal input from other outside sources. Our aim is to build a model farm, a small family business that will grow organically with the market demands and benefit all. We are building a model farm that serves as an educational center and hope to see other farmers join our efforts to bring on “Green Bali”.

After few years of growing produce we realized that there is a “new” need to process food locally and insure consumers that they know what they are eating and where the food come from. The need became obvious after the discovery of contaminates in food processed far away. To be able to process food we built a kitchen and restaurant 3 years ego. A couple of years back we collected rice seeds from around Indonesia and had a “Rice tasting competition” when we found out the best tasting rice among 20 varieties of organic rice seeds. Now we mainly grow 2 kinds of rice: Limboto and Ijo gading. We grow the rice around the restaurant and have few farmers that grow rice for us in other parts of Bali. We store the rice in the husk and prepare it for sell on demand to insure freshness. We are still looking for other varieties and would like to preserve as many indigenous rice strands as we can.
We are growing as many varieties of vegetables as we can in our 2 gardens. One farm is near the Restaurant and the other in the mountains, near Kintamani, where we can grow vegetables and fruits that need cooler weather. Our main aim is to encourage farmers to diversify and relearn to produce a complete diet locally to become independent of the need to import food while earning enough money to live decent lives and be proud of their occupation. We pay about 3 times more for organic rice than what an average farmer gets for the regular, chemically grown, and highbred.
In a world of fast disappearing nature we feel that here in Ubud there is a chance to return to farming techniques that work with Nature and not against it. We still are lucky to have, here, in the Ubud area enough variety of flora and fauna to be able to keep the food chain intact. In our gardens we do not use any pesticides organic or non-organic. Until now it worked wonderfully.
At this time we divide our operation into 4 parts:
- The farms; where we grow vegetables and fruit.
- Rice: we grow our own rice and buy organic rice from few selected farmers that grow rice for us. We also process the rice and sell it.
- Bodag Maliah and Umã-Alas our two restaurants in Ubud.
- Food processing; at this time we make Jams, natural syrups, fruit wines, tofu, soy feta and soy ricotta cheeses, natural sauces, different kinds of bread, pickling, sprouting seeds, fermented teas, roasting nuts, etc. We are always experimenting with new products and ideas for better foods and health products.
We hope you enjoy our products and your stay at our restaurants.
